A Year of Red and White Quilt Challenges

artwork year of red and white quilt challenges_edited-1

For generations, many quilters have loved Red and White Quilts. But they definitely grew in popularity during a special quilt exhibit "Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts", in New York City, which was sponsored by the American Folk Art Museum in March, 2011.  There were 615 red and white quilts on display for a period of 5 days, all from a collection of quilts curated by Elizabeth Warren.

In  May 2011, Barb Vlack hosted an amazing Red and Whilte Quilt Design Challenge for EQ users that was inspired by the red and white quilt exhibit in New York City. There is an inspirational gallery of entries in this challenge at the EQ website.

Also, inspired by Red and White Quilts, SewCalGal is making 2014 "The Year of Red and White Quilt Challenges.  They'll be several different phases (aka challenges) and you may wish to enter one or all of these challenges.  While every phase focuses on red and white quilts, of all sizes, the challenges are all different.  They open the door for those that like to design, those that like to make quilts with their own design or with a purchased or free design, as well as those that enjoy free-motion quilting and more!

The more challenges and shows you enter in 2014 the more chances you'll have to win a prize generously donated by one or more sponsors.

Email SewCalGal email address copyif you have questions or feedback.

Phase 3 - Make It - A Red and White Quilt Design Challenge

This phase is open to all quilters who may want to make a project using their unique design or a purchased design, or free pattern design.

Projects may be of any size, but will need to be made in 2014 and when you enter you'll need to show evidence that you made your red and white quilt project this year.  You can make your project with any red and white fabrics, from any fabric manufacturer and they can be any shade of red and white, but they do need to reflect a red/white quilt theme (not red/white/black, and yes, red/cream is ok).

While some designers and want to be designers may only want to show a sneak peak (photo of their finished quilt) in this challenge, others may want to share a tutorial or free pattern/PDF download for others to also make one.

Participants are also invited to share precision piecing tips and tutorials and/or free-motion quilting tips and tutorials during this challenge.

Throughout this challenge period, SewCalGal will also be increasing awareness of precision piecing tips and tutorials, free-motion quilting tips and tutorials, as well as products to help with making our red and white quilts that are perfectly pieced (or applique'), as well as beautifully free-motion quilting.  But, of course, you can also have your quilt professionally quilted by your longarmer too!

Challenge Timeline:  March 24th  thru September 30th

Phase 4 - Show It - Part 2 - You Made It/You Designed It

red and white quilt show - Show It - You design and Made it

This is a virtual quilt show for those that designed and made their red and white quilt in 2014.  Both Bloggers and non-bloggers will be able to share their red and white quilt projects that they've made in 2014, to also enter to win prizes in this challenge.

Challenge Timeline:  October lst - 10th

Part 2 - Show It  -  Made with Purchased/Free Designs

red and white quilt show - Show It - Not the Designer, but you Made it_edited-1

This is a virtual quilt show for those that may have purchased a pattern or book, or used a free pattern, to make their red and white quilt in 2014.  Both Bloggers and non-bloggers will be able to share their red and white quilt projects that they've made in 2014, to also enter to win prizes in this challenge.

Challenge Timeline:  October 13th - 20th

SPONSORS/PRIZES

SewCalGal originally thought of having each challenged sponsored with prize giveaways, but has now concluded it will be best to have all sponsored prizes giveaway at the end of the Year of Red and White Quilt Challenges (e.g. November 2014).

Participants that enter one or more challenges throughout the year will be eligible to win prizes.  Enter more challenges and you get more chances to win prizes.  As this Year of Red and White Quilt Challenges is all about fun, Designers and Sponsors are invited to participate, enter challenges and win prizes too!

But, sponsors do have the right to sponsor specific challenges or events.  For example, a Fabric Manufacturer may want to sponsor the Design It! Challenge and give fabric to one or more winners to make their design using that fabric manufacturer's red/white fabrics. And, possibly that fabric manufacturer may want to negotiate with the designer to have their design made available as a free pattern on the Manufacturers site.  Likewise a magazine may want to offer a prize to have their favorite design published in their magazine.  All great prizes that would be appropriate to award winners of the Design It Challenge vs waiting to award prizes at the end of the year. Thus, sponsors can work with SewCalGal to determine if they wish to sponsor a specific challenge vs allowing their prize to be awarded randomly to those that entered any of the challenges during this year of red/white challenges.

All Prizes will be randomly awarded.  The number of winners will be based on how many prizes are donated and they will be divided equally among all of the categories.

Just a small correction. The Red and White Show in NY was in March of 2011. I had the good fortune to attend this on the opening day with board members from The Vermont Quilt Festival. It was just spectacular.
